Vaccinium virgatum 'Tifblue'
fruitTifblue is the most widely planted rabbiteye blueberry in the world, a 1955 University of Georgia release that thrives where northern highbush types struggle with heat. Rabbiteye blueberries are Southern natives - vigorous, long-lived, more heat- and drought-tolerant, and lower-chill (around 600 to 700 hours), suiting zones 7 to 9. Tifblue grows into a large 6 to 10 ft bush bearing late-season, light-blue, sweet berries with a small dry stem scar. Rabbiteyes are self-unfruitful, so Tifblue must be planted with another rabbiteye variety such as Powderblue or Climax to set a crop.

Fertilizer
Acidic / ammonium sulfate formula
Like all blueberries, Tifblue needs acidic soil at pH 4.5 to 5.5 - test and amend with sulfur or peat well ahead of planting. Set dormant bushes in early spring at the same depth they grew in the nursery, giving the large rabbiteye plants room: 6 ft apart in rows 10 to 12 ft apart. Mulch deeply with pine bark or sawdust and keep the shallow roots consistently moist. Tifblue absolutely requires a second, different rabbiteye variety nearby for cross-pollination. Prune out the oldest canes each late winter to keep the tall bush productive and pickable.

Proactive ways to stop trouble before it starts — tap a name with an arrow for its full guide
Harvest ripe berries every 1 to 2 days, chill or freeze them promptly to kill any larvae, and use fine netting where the fly is active
Net the tall bush as berries color; consider a netted frame, since rabbiteyes get large
Mummy berry
Remove fallen mummified fruit and refresh mulch in spring to bury the spores
Blueberry maggot
Monitor with yellow sticky traps and keep dropped fruit cleaned up
Prune for airflow in the dense canopy, avoid overhead watering, and clear infected twigs in wet spells
Tifblue ripens late in the blueberry season, often stretching the harvest into late summer. Rabbiteye berries especially benefit from patience - let them hang several days past first blue until fully sweet and they roll off easily. Pick every few days. Tifblue holds and ships exceptionally well thanks to its small dry scar and firm skin, and it freezes cleanly. Expect strong yields from year three onward; mature bushes are very long-lived and heavy-bearing.
Tifblue berries carry the celebrated blueberry antioxidants - skin anthocyanins associated with brain and heart health - along with vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, and fiber at about 57 calories per 100 g. Sweet and firm, they are excellent fresh, frozen, or baked, and rabbiteye berries like Tifblue are especially prized for their long storage life.
