Citrofortunella microcarpa
fruitCalamondin is the Philippine cooking citrus, a small evergreen tree producing marble-sized round fruits that turn from green to bright orange. The juice is intensely sour with a sweet aromatic peel; calamondin is the classic flavoring for Filipino cuisine, kalamansi juice, and marmalade. The plant is ornamental, bearing flowers and fruit year-round, and is one of the most container-friendly citrus.

Calamondin produces fruit and flowers year-round, with the heaviest crop in winter and summer. Pick when fruit is bright orange and gives slightly to thumb pressure (under-ripe greenish fruit is much more sour). Use the juice anywhere you would use lemon or lime; the peel is sweetly aromatic and excellent in marmalade and dried for spice blends. Trees in containers can produce 50 or more fruit per year.
About 37 calories per 100 g with 3.8 g fiber and high vitamin C. Calamondin juice provides the same flavor-balancing acidity as lemon or lime with a distinct floral aromatic top note, and the whole fruit (juice plus peel) makes marmalade with an extraordinary flavor profile unique to this hybrid.
