Rubus × 'Boysenberry'
fruitBoysenberry is a 1920s Knotts Berry Farm hybrid (raspberry x blackberry x dewberry x loganberry) producing huge deep-maroon aggregate berries 8 g each with a soft thin skin and the famous sweet-tart bramble flavor that made the variety a California icon. The trailing thorny canes need a sturdy trellis but reward the effort with one of the most flavorful cane berries in any garden.

Plant in full sun on well-drained slightly acidic soil. Set crowns 5 to 8 ft apart in rows 8 to 10 ft apart with the crown at nursery soil depth. Boysenberry is trailing, so build a sturdy 2-wire trellis at 3 ft and 5 ft and tie canes in. Floricanes bear, then die; cut spent canes to the ground in fall and train the new primocanes onto the trellis for next years crop.

Proactive ways to stop trouble before it starts — tap a name with an arrow for its full guide
Drape fine exclusion netting at first color; pick ripe fruit immediately and refrigerate
Watch for tip wilt; prune 6 in below entry holes and destroy canes off-site
Hand-pick into soapy water; never use pheromone traps which attract more beetles
Remove old fruiting canes promptly, prune for airflow, avoid overhead watering
Boysenberry ripens in mid-June through early July, depending on climate. Pick when berries are uniformly deep maroon-black and slip easily off the receptacle. The thin skin and large size make boysenberries fragile; do not stack berries deep in the picking basket. Eat within 2 to 3 days, or freeze for cobblers and jam (Boysenberry pie is the classic Knotts Berry Farm dish).
About 50 calories per 100 g with 5 g fiber, 21 mg vitamin C, and 162 mg potassium. Boysenberries are exceptionally rich in anthocyanins and ellagic acid (more than blueberries by some measures), both linked to anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects.
