Sow seeds 1 in deep, 3 to 4 seeds per hill, with hills spaced 36 in apart and rows 6 ft apart. Black plastic mulch warms the soil and is strongly recommended in northern gardens. Side-dress before vines run with 1 lb of 34-0-0 per 100 ft of row, and again after bloom. Water consistently while fruit is sizing; cut back as harvest approaches to concentrate sugars.

Honeydew ripens 90 to 110 days from sowing. Watch for the rind to lose all green tint and turn creamy yellow-white; the leaf nearest the fruit will yellow, and the blossom end will yield slightly to thumb pressure. Cut the stem at full ripeness with pruners (do not pull; honeydews do not slip). Honeydew does not continue to sweeten after harvest, so timing is everything.
