Toxic if eaten
Toxic - do not eat. All parts, especially the seeds and young growth, contain diterpenoid alkaloids; ingestion can cause numbness, weakness, and in larger amounts paralysis, and can be fatal, particularly to children. Grow as an ornamental only and keep the seeds away from children and pets.
Consolida ajacis
flowerLarkspur is the annual delphinium - 3 to 4 ft tapering spires densely packed with finely cut blue, purple, pink, or white blooms above ferny foliage. A spring-blooming cool-season annual that hates heat and bolts to seed and dies by midsummer, leaving a few weeks of dramatic flower production. Direct sow only; the taproot resents transplanting. The vintage cottage-garden look in a single packet of seed. All parts are toxic if eaten.

Soil Type
Rich, well-draining, slightly alkaline
Hardiness Zones
Zones 2 – 11
Grown as an annual — this range is its winter hardiness, but you can grow it for a single season in any zone.
When to Fertilize
Light feed at sowing only
Fertilizer
Compost or balanced 10-10-10
Larkspur needs cool soil and dark to germinate. In zones 7 and warmer, direct sow in fall (October to November) for spring bloom; in colder zones, direct sow as early as the soil can be worked in spring. Refrigerate seed for at least 7 days before sowing to break dormancy. Sow 1/4 in. deep (darkness required for germination) in full sun and rich, slightly alkaline, well-drained soil. Thin to 8 to 12 in. apart. Stake tall stalks early. Plants die after flowering; pull them and replant the bed with a heat-loving annual.
🌼 Have a different variety?Cultivars of the same species usually share the same basic care — they differ mainly in flower color, height, and bloom form, not in how you grow them. So this guide still applies even if your exact variety isn't the one shown.

Proactive ways to stop trouble before it starts — tap a name with an arrow for its full guide
Hose off colonies and plant alyssum nearby for hoverflies; aphids worsen when plants are stressed by heat
Use grit barriers or traps in cool damp spring weather when larkspur seedlings are most vulnerable
Space well, water at the base, and accept that larkspur tends to mildew as it dies in midsummer heat
Toxicity
All parts of larkspur are toxic if eaten - plant away from areas frequented by pets, livestock, and small children
Cut larkspur when about a third of the buds on the spike have opened and the rest still show color; the spike continues to open in the vase. Cut deeply - down to a basal leaf - in the cool of the morning. Strip the lower leaves and place stems immediately into cool water. Vase life is about 7 to 10 days. Larkspur dries beautifully if hung upside down in small bundles in a warm, dry, dark spot.
Larkspur is grown for its flowers and is a strong pollinator plant - the bumblebees and butterflies pry open the long-spurred blooms for nectar deep inside. The dried flowers hold their color exceptionally well and are a staple of wreath and confetti work. Note: all parts are toxic if eaten, particularly the seeds - this is an ornamental plant only.
